Feel Good Fruits // Felty Faces

When organising my folder I came across lots of off cuts from the felt key rings I designed and created on the laser cutter.  As the project is called Feel Good, I decided to make smiley faces out of the material.  I wish that I had done this sooner, I would like to create a stop motion with the top image as the felt isn't actually stuck down, I think it could look really effective.

Feel Good Drinks // Final Crit Feedback

  • the keyrings are an interesting idea, but would they be a permanent addition to the bottles or a one off/ speacial edition thing?
  • the labels are bright and colourful in a way that would attract people to buy the drinks
  • the keyrings would almost definitely get more people to buy the drinks as they're easily a 'collectable' set
  • the idea of key rings is interesting & adds an extra element to the designs
  • having the bottle cover in fruit is effective but you need to make room for the logo & packaging information.  The layout of the fruit has to be key within the designs
  • the keyrings will definitely get more people to buy the drinks as they could work as a series/set/prizes etc.  They are bright and allow for interaction and competition
  • handmade materials also links in well with eco and being healthy and organic
  • good idea
  • all good fruit shapes work better with less detail I feel, illustrations look friendly and approachable
  • interactiveness of the design is good - gives something for audience to do whilst sat drinking - not seen previously
  • time and effort put into keyrings really paid off with high quality achieved
  • illustration style works well on bottle but the hand rendered approach doesn't work as well in a set with key rings as they are quite regular shapes
  • experiment more with the colour schemes - look at using brighter reds all over labels similar to key rings
  • expand the product range further - include some of the posters you mentioned in the brief
  • think more about how the key rings would attach to bottles and photograph in context
  • prefer the felt key rings - more tactile and nicer to handle than the laser cut wood versions.
  • gradient is not needed, everything else in developed well
  • create some mock ups of the bottles with the new drinks labels.

Feel Good // Keyring Design

Below are my designs for the keyrings, ready to take to the laser cutter.  The designs will be cut out of colourful felt, reflecting the fruity feel.  I think the designs make quite an interesting pattern and might try and develop this further and apply it to something else.

Feel Good Drinks Development // Felty Fruity Keyrings

For the Feel Good Drinks brief I thought it would be a nice/good idea to give away free fruity key rings.  Initially I was going to make the key rings out of heavy duty card but I decided that they would be too flimsy and then the key ring would become more of a throwaway gift.  I have chosen to experiment with felt as it will hold its own better than card.  This could almost make the key rings a collectable item but either way I think it will help entice people into buying a Feel Good Drink as lots of people haven't heard of or seen them before.  This will make them more eye catching.  I'd also like to experiment with the laser cutter to make wooden key rings as well.

Feel Good Drinks Development

Starting to place the information on the illustrated labels.  I received feedback from some peers in the crit that they think the gradient makes it look cheap so I have tried using a block colour and think it works okay, still needs some development.

The labels below I think are coming on well, they still need to be placed onto the actual label shape that is included in the feel good competition pack. I would prefer to have the information under neath the logo however for the cranberry and lime drink it won't work because of the placement of the cranberries you wouldn't be able to read the read writing and I'm trying to use a limited amount of colours in each label.

Responsive Critique // Feel Good Drinks

Crit Feedback:

Kerning on the bottle (tracking)
Gradient Cheapens logo in our opinion
Colours are good nice vibe
Try to emphasise the flavour of the drink more in text
Suitable typeface chosen which we feel really fits the young health conscious audience

Clear and simple design style
Beautiful illustrations
Adjustment to the circle in the middle, could make it perfect circle
Annotation would be helpful for us to understand the concept
Present more in depth information about the audience

Has the potential product range been fully exploited?

Has the context of delivery been considered?

Has audience or gender been considered?

How much information is needed?

Feel Food Drinks // Design Boards

So far my design boards don't have any text on them but these are not the final ones, just a way that I've been keeping track of my progress in illustrator really.

I got a bit carried away drawing fruit and editing them in illustrator before I actually checked the flavours of the sparkling range of feel good drinks and got them a bit wrong, but at least it's good practice!

Below are a few different label design idea's.  The one on the left was my original idea to have the bottle completely covered in fruit illustrations.

Below you can see what the fruit illustrations look like when merged together to make a label shape.  I think it is quite effective, especially the lemon one in the middle.  The kiwi one can be disregarded but it is still an example .. maybe even a possible future flavour!

Below I was just experimenting further with what I could do with the illustrations, I thought perhaps I could screen print these.  I might do this in my own time for my personal practice as it isn't particularly relevant to the brief.

Feel Good Drinks // Design Sheet // Initial Drawings

To begin the feel good brief I have drawn up some design sheets.  I want the designs to be bright colours as it states in the brief that feel good want their customers to smile.  I originally came up with the idea that the entire bottle would be covered in fruit and the flavour of the drink would be a peelable fruit sticker.

I then decided that having the whole bottle covered in fruit would be quite hard for me to re-create or make mock ups of, and thought that perhaps it could be too costly.  I then decided to stick to the original label shape and place my fruit illustrations onto that.

The idea of giving out free fruity keyrings will help promote the brand and get it more noticed.  The item could be a collectable and get people to carry on buying into the brand.  The keyrings would probably be limited edition due to costs.

Responsive Module // YCN Brief - Feel Good Drinks

http://www.ycn.org/awards/ycn-student-awards/2012-2013/briefs/the-feel-good-drinks-company#.UJuDyakUUy4

Why have you chosen that particular brief?

I have chosen the feel good drinks brief because I am becoming more and more interested in packaging design and I really want to try having a go at food/drink packaging design, the brief is also light-hearted which helped my decision.

What do you want to get out of it?

I want to have a chance to design for a well known brand, gain recognition and experience and possibly get paid!

What do you want to do/make?

I want to redesign some packaging for feel good drinks - make it more noticeable and appealing/eye catching.

Why do you want to enter it?

I really admire good food/drink packaging design and would be happy to win.
There is quite a lot of freedom with the brief, you are given a logo and typeface but you are allowed to change them.
It also says you're allowed to be cheeky... which is great :)

What's the problem?

Current packaging design is quite modest and goes unnoticed
Only 2 out of 5 people in their target market are aware of feel good

What is it asking you to do about it?

Evolve the design, make it less modest and more eye catching and cheeky.

What is it trying to achieve?

To have a rebranded product and welcome in more customers
Make people happy/satisfied with product as then they will return.
Generate more money.

What are the 10 most important words in the brief?

100% Natural Ingredients
Healthy
Uncluttered
Fresh
Label
Smile
Tasty
PMA (Positive Mental Attitutde)

What is the message?

100% natural ingredients
No added sugar
Healthy/Honest
Make people feel good

What is the Audience?

16-34 year olds
sociable people
working people
happy, 'look on the brightside people'

What is the context?

Supermarkets
Cafe's
Ice-cream van
Packed lunch
Beach

What products are associated with it?

Fridge
Glass
Straws
Coasters
Bottle Opener

What do you have to do?

Re-design the packaging labels for 'The Feel Good Drinks Company"

What do you need to do?

Make the design stand out more, get the brand out there, more recognisable - consider target audience.  Convey the message that their drinks are 100% natural and tasty

What can you do?

Re-design labelling either computer aided, screen print, hand-rendered, change typeface and logo

What could you do?

Could re-design the shape of the bottle

What hasn't been done before?

Feel good juice water feature
